Class Events

Warren Gelman reports on a long-standing tradition of Class of 1967 classmate trips to some of America’s greatest golf destinations.

“I want to report on the Class of 1967 golf trips that have taken place for more than 35 years. Together with members of the Class of 1968 and a few people from other classes, the group has traveled to Bandon Dunes in Bandon Oregon, Sand Valley in Wisconsin, Cabot Links on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and many destinations in Florida, South Carolina, and other states.

“This year’s trip was to The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia and included 11 classmates and some wives/friends. Participating this year were: Warren Gelman, Jack Walsh, Mike Brooks, Tony Barclay, Dick Lawler, John Kane, John Raben, Rick Tilghman, Mike Leahy, Wint Ritchie and Jack Morrison. 1967 classmates who have participated over the years include Ted Carey; the late Martin Sear and the late Dwight Miller. Jim Rogers and Jim Kreuttner who started in the Class of 1967 but graduated in 1968 have also participated in many trips. Although these trips are organized around golf, the primary purpose is to get people together and continue friendships that started more than 60 years ago.

“Jim Rogers who started in our class but graduated in 1968 has been on many trips and he was a stalwart on the [Yale Golf] team for three years. Jonathan Coles Class of 1968 and Ned Snyder Class of 1966 have been regulars and also played on the golf team. Other classes also have been represented. Mike Hanson class of 1965 and Andy Dwyer class of 1969 have been regulars on the trips for many years. Other members of our class who went on the trips in the past are David Brewer and Ted Carey.”

Our 1967 Whiffenpoofs and spouses convened at the historic Fraunces Tavern in the Battery in Manhattan in late April for a celebratory dinner. Five ’67 classmates met in Evanston, IL, for a great dinner in mid-December. L-R: Jim Taylor, Bob Lehrer, Greg Jorjorian, Jerry de Jaager, and Don Metzger. The group tries to convene monthly in Chicago. The best part of this event was when Bob received a call from his granddaughter, Chava, announcing she had just been accepted to Yale, early action. Congratulations to Chava, and Boola! to all.

At the December gathering of the Class of ’67 monthly luncheon at the Yale Club of New York City, six classmates enjoyed good fellowship – and a good meal. Our usual meeting is held the second Wednesday of each month at the Yale Club, 50 Vanderbilt Ave. We gather around 12:30pm, but latecomers are always welcome. You need not be a member of the Club to attend this lunch (but bring some cash to reimburse a classmate member who will sign for your meal). Yale Wins!

At the ’67 Class Tent before The Game on Saturday, November 23 were, left to right, Jean McMahon, Dave Stevens, Chris Kule, Bob Ramage, Andy Skodol (seated), Rick Luis and Bill Messinger; also attending were Nita Luis, Keating Hagmann, George and Shelly Lazarus, George and Libby Pataki, Dan Smith, Dave and Marianne Richards, Mike Slater and Maria Santoro, and Elliott Detchon. After the thrilling game ended tied at 36 in regulation, our loyal classmates were treated to the thrilling 50-43 double overtime victory, considered by many Yalies as fitting revenge for the infamous 29-29 Tie in 1968, which many of us attended. The Game was interrupted for nearly an hour by a protest that pushed the finish of The Game well past sunset. Our stalwarts hung in there to see the hard-fought victory that earned Yale a share of the Ivy League Championship. Boola!
